What each power-up does in JBay Wave Rider, and when to use it.
Paddle Out & Play Free →Shield
The shield absorbs exactly one hit from an obstacle before wearing off, buying you a single mistake without ending the run. It's most valuable saved for a speed-tier jump or an unusually dense obstacle pattern, rather than spent the moment you pick it up. See our tips guide for more on shield timing.
Coin magnet
While active, the coin magnet pulls nearby coins toward your surfer automatically, so you don't need to line up perfectly with every coin in a lane. It's especially useful for banking coins toward the surfboard unlocks in our surfboards guide, since it lets you collect coins in lanes you're passing through rather than only the lane you're actively riding.
Score multiplier
This power-up temporarily boosts the value of everything you earn on top of your existing combo multiplier, described in our combo and scoring guide. It's most effective when picked up while a combo is already running high, since the two multipliers stack.
Speed burst
A short burst of extra forward speed, useful for closing distance to the next set of coins or clearing a stretch of the wave quickly. Because it also shortens your reaction time to upcoming obstacles, it rewards players who already have the lane patterns memorized rather than players still learning the basics in our how to play guide.
Random swell events
Beyond the standard power-ups, random swell events occasionally shake up a run — altering obstacle patterns or wave behavior temporarily. These aren't collectible power-ups so much as run modifiers, and reacting to them quickly is part of what keeps longer runs from feeling repetitive.
Prioritizing power-ups mid-run
When a run offers a choice between two power-ups close together, general priority is: shield first if you've had a close call recently, score multiplier if your combo is already high, and coin magnet or speed burst otherwise. None of this replaces solid lane reading — power-ups extend a good run, they don't rescue a bad one.
